The shaft of the boot is canvas. This can be hard to keep clean. However, the use of a protector spray will help to prevent stains and dye from denim transfer etc.

Although it doesn’t seem very professional, the best form of protection when polishing a boot with a canvas or light coloured shaft, would be the use of masking tape (decorating tape) to avoid staining.
